The Art & History Exploration is an interactive hands-on program which allows students to explore art and history. It provides a rich cultural experience to children from K to grade 5 where they can step back in time and experience the fascinating cultural heritage of the early Francophone community of Maillardville.
The Art & History Exploration program is an affordable 3-hour experience that begins with a tour of the CPR Railway Station (Garde de Fraser Mills Station) and Musee Mackin Museum followed by two workshops in dance, drama, or visual arts.
Tour: Students learn about transportation and telegraph communication in 1910 and glimpse the lives of Coquitlam's pioneers in a walk through a period kitchen, salon, dining room, bedroom and bathroom. They see artifacts from Maillardville and Fraser Mills including a marvelous antique toy, game and doll collection, tools, photographs, and many other treasures.
Workshops: Students draw, transform, create, plan, interpret, act, speak and express within the context of Maillardville's unique heritage.
To incorporate the visit to Place des Arts into the curriculum, teachers are provided with a resource guide including activities and have access to the historical bin loan program for use in the classroom.
Call to Book: The Art & History Exploration Program is available weekday mornings from 9:00 am to noon (with a flexible schedule). Contact the Art & History Exploration program coordinator 604-664-1636.
Fees: Thanks to the generous support of our funders the Coquitlam Foundation and the Rotary Club of Coquitlam, we are able to offer this arts enrichment program for just $6.25 per student. Attending parents can join the tour for free.
This unique program has been well-received by students and adults alike. Student comments:
“When we made the houses I learned that the people grew their own food.”
“In the museum I learned that refrigerators were powered by a giant block of ice. And they had to dry their clothes by leaving them outside.”
Teacher comments:
“The activities and tour were very interactive for the children. A very complete and valuable learning opportunity.”
