Place des Arts: Key Facts and Figures:
An integrated arts centre that offers programs and courses in every artistic discipline, gallery space and various special events throughout the year, Place des Arts (PdA) is a non-profit society governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

History:

  • Began in 1972 in Ryan House, a turn-of-the-century residence built for the manager of a lumber mill.
  • In 1996, this community arts centre and music school expanded into 18,000 square feet.

Location and Facility:

  • Located in historic Maillardville, Coquitlam’s vibrant francophone community.
  • Four beautiful galleries exhibit and sell work from local emerging artists.
  • Popular gift shop showcases unique, handcrafted items from local artists and artisans.
  • Fourteen well-appointed music studios offer space for private and group music lessons.
  • Perennially popular pottery classes take place in the pottery wing, which features four kilns in which up to 5,000 pieces are fired each year.
  • A fibre arts studio, equipped with twenty looms of various sizes, where students learn weaving, basketry, dyeing, and many other fabric arts.
  • Painting and drawing studios where various classes are held for budding artists of all ages

People and Programs:

  • Every year, approximately 80 self-employed, highly qualified instructors teach courses in a variety of artistic disciplines to more than 1500 students of all ages.
  • On any given day, Place des Arts provides 18 different cultural programs in music, visual arts, dance, drama, and movement.
  • In a 2005 survey, 94% of respondents ranked the quality of instruction, class experience and overall course rating as good or excellent; over 58% of our clientele are returning students.
  • A talented staff team of almost 20 manages the facility, arts programs, promotions, and community events.
  • Over 200 dedicated volunteers perform more than 5,000 hours of work each year, including helping stage special events, mount exhibitions, distribute promotional materials, prepare photo archives, design displays, guide tours, and assist in the office.
  • Last year 242 artists participated in 21 solo and group exhibitions
    Since 2001 more than $24,000 in scholarships and bursaries has been awarded to deserving PdA students.
  • Many former PdA students go on to careers in their artistic fields, garnering awards in competitions and recitals.
  • Over 63,000 members of the public visit Place des Arts each year to browse the gift shop, enjoy art exhibitions, attend special events, or take classes.
  • Place des Arts consistently realizes 66% of its $1.6 million budget from self-earned revenues.
  • Place des Arts launched a new, easy to navigate website in 2006. It was designed by Iscape, and the main photographs that appear in the website were taken by Kent Kallberg
