Theatre Arts Classes

Place des Arts’ progressive Theatre Arts program for children and youth offers outstanding training in theatrical performance.

Our program offers introductory and intermediate-level classes and builds the fundamental skills necessary to prepare students for a pre-professional performance class for older youth. Classes are taught by highly skilled working professionals who take pride in making sure all students receive personalized attention. Class sizes are based on the needs of the content, while maintaining a low teacher-to-student ratio.

New for 2013/14: The Place des Arts Theatre Company!

The Theatre Company is a performance-based class made up of a group of dedicated aspiring actors between the ages of 13 and 17. Led by director Tim Perez and skills coach Amy Feld, company members will meet twice a week to rehearse towards two public performances, an original showcase in December and Spoon River Anthology in June. Musical Theatre Basics (5-7 years)

Sing, act and dance in this lively musical theatre class. Through games and exercises, you’ll be introduced to warming up, important terms and etiquette, vocal exploration, coordination and storytelling. Combine your skills in a short musical theatre piece and perform it at the end of the session for family and friends.

Learn what it takes to be a Triple Threat! Acting, singing, dancing . . . from the basics to performance level. In a fun and energetic atmosphere, you’ll practice musical theatre skills through games and exercises. Using popular musical theatre material and routines, experience what it takes to be a member of GLEE or a Broadway Triple Threat! Teacher: Erika Babins

Next Stage (13-17 years)

Veteran film and television actor Cavan Cunningham (Mayor Fitzy in Corner Gas) is joining theatre teacher and performer Amy Feld to lead our ongoing Next Stage class, and you can join in too! Register now for a January 2013 start.

Next Stage puts an emphasis on live performance. Train using elements of movement, improvisation and voice. Be an integral part of a team of young actors committed to the production of an exciting published script. A performance of the play in our black-box theatre rounds out the season. *Next Stage Fees
A $50 production fee is applied per student participating in the Next Stage class and is used to offset the production cost of the year-end performance. It is non-refundable. This is an ongoing class; therefore, registration must be done in person at Place des Arts. A registration fee applies to all ongoing classes.

Instant Theatre (7-11 years)

Challenge yourself – create some instant theatre! Play drama games, tell stories and work together as a group to develop your creative muscles. Put together a script based on characters you invent and then perform it! Be a part of a team, confront a few fears and gain confidence with your creative ideas. Teacher: Amy Feld

Drama Club (11-13 years)

Join the drama club! This class takes a multidisciplinary approach to acting – without losing the fun! Read scenes, write scenes, create characters and at the end of each session, put on a performance for friends and family. Don’t dream it – be it! Teacher: Amy Feld

Next Stage* (13-17 years)

Next Stage is a pre-professional class with an emphasis on live performance. Train using elements of movement, improvisation and voice, and be an integral part of a team of young actors committed to the production of two exciting published scripts. Leading professional actor and Jessie Award winner Simon Webb will join the class to mentor students and perform with them at Place des Arts’ winter A Lantern Affair celebration in December. A final performance of the second script in our black-box theatre in June rounds out the season. Teachers: Kevin Bennett and Amy Feld

A $75 production fee is applied per student participating in the Next Stage class and is used to offset the production cost of the year-end performance. 50% of this fee will be refunded if the student withdraws from the class by Dec 31, 2012. It is non-refundable from Jan 1, 2013 onward. This is an ongoing class; therefore, registration must be done in person at Place des Arts. A registration fee applies to all ongoing classes.
